1896 Summer Olympics

The 1896 Olympics was in April, in Athens, Greece. The gymnastics competitions were held in the infield of the Panathinaiko Stadium. The events were the horizontal bar, the parallel bars, the pommel horse, rings, rope climbing and vault. Germany had an eleven man team and they did very well. They ended up winnning both team events and Alfred Flatow won the parallel bars and Carl Schuhmann won the vault. A swiss gymnast by the name of louis Zutter won the pommel horse and Ioannis Mitropoulos and Nikolaos Andriakopoulos who were Greek won the rings and rope climbing. There was NO womens gymnastics in the 1896 Olympics. Also, the Olympic Games had the largest international participation of any sporting event to that date. There was not another Olympic Games in Greece until the summer of 2004.
